Ca Chelators and Membrane Transport: “Geometric” Considerations

We examine theoretically the ability of diffusible cytoplasmic carriers to facilitate delivery of substrate to sites within biological membranes. Two processes are analyzed. In one, delivery of Ca to a site on a membrane surface is examined. As a contrasting example, chelator-supported diffusion to a uniform absorbing surface is considered.

Membrane transport and intracellular sequestration of novel thiosemicarbazone chelators for the treatment of cancer.

Iron is a critical nutrient for DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation. Targeting iron in cancer cells using specific chelators is a potential new strategy for the development of novel anticancer agents. One such chelator, 2-benzoylpyridine 4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (Bp4eT), possesses potent and selective anticancer activity (J Med Chem 50:3716-3729, 2007). To elucidate the mechanisms of it...

Contribution of Na/Ca transport to the resting membrane potential

Relations are derived that describe the combined effects of electrodiffusion, the Na/K pump, and Na/Ca transport by carrier on the resting membrane potential. Equations are derived that apply to both steady-state and non-steady-state conditions. Some example calculations from the equations are plotted at different permeability coefficient ratios, PK:PCa:PNa. The equations predict a depolarizing...

Roles of Diastolic Leak and Ca Transport

Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of death and enormous effort has focused at understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the decreased cardiac contractility. While changes of other components contribute, it is generally agreed that much of the contractile deficit is due to reduced myocyte Ca transients.1,2 Alterations in Ca current (ICa) and action potential characteristics are ...

Ca-Transport through Plasma Membrane as a Test of Auxin Sensitivity

Auxin is one of the crucial regulators of plant growth and development. The discovered auxin cytosolic receptor (TIR1) is not involved in the perception of the hormone signal at the plasma membrane. Instead, another receptor, related to the ABP1, auxin binding protein1, is supposed to be responsible for the perception at the plasma membrane. One of the fast and sensitive auxin-induced reactions...
